It’s a New Day- And A New Year!

Resolutions! We all make them- lose weight, save money, spend time with family, read more books. While thinking of resolutions you could make take time and read some resolutions that Jonathan Edwards (a preacher from the past made)

These resolutions were written in his personal diary:

“Resolved, that I will do whatsoever I think to be most to the glory of God, and my own good, profit, and pleasure, in the whole of my duration; without any consideration of the time, whether now, or never so many myriads of ages hence.
Resolved, to do whatever I think to be my duty, and most for the good and advantage of mankind in general.
Resolved, never to lose one moment of time, but to improve it in the most profitable way I possibly can.
Resolved, to live with all my might, while I do live.
Resolved, never to do anything, which I should be afraid to do if it were the last hour of my life.
Resolved, never to do anything out of revenge.
Resolved, never to speak evil of any one, so that it shall tend to his dishonour, more or less, upon no account except for some real good.
Resolved, to study the Scriptures so steadily, constantly, and frequently, as that I may find, and plainly perceive, myself to grow in the knowledge of the same.
Resolved, to ask myself, at the end of every day, week, month, and year, wherein I could possibly, in any respect, have done better.
Resolved, never to give over, nor in the least to slacken, my fight with my corruptions, however unsuccessful I may be.
Resolved, always to do that which I shall wish I had done when I see others do it. Let there be something of benevolence in all that I speak.”

Take some time this week and evaluate your life. Recognize how you have failed God and discover ways you can do better. Understand that God’s mercies are new every morning- not every year! Celebrate His mercy by asking for forgiveness when you fail and move forward. Commit to drawing closer to God this year.

Give us your input on ideas that could help get closer to God.

Surprised by Their Unbelief

Beyond Belief! That’s the name of the show that aired on Wednesday night 7/13/11 just after we got in from Bible study at “the Lake”.

It was disheartening to listen to the testimonies on the virgin birth. One lady said “there is no reason to believe that Mary was a virgin- there were no 1st century fact checkers there- only 2 out of 4 gospels state that Mary was a virgin.”

A man gave testimony that he was “not really big on the virgin birth as being scientifically viable.”

In Mark chapter 6 Jesus is taken back by the unbelief of the people from His home town. Jesus couldn’t do many mighty works in Nazareth because of the unbelief of the people. It wasn’t because He didn’t have the power to or desire to.

God is looking for someone who knows they need a miracle today to trust Him for what He can do. Do you need a miracle? In your family? In your finances?

Do you believe God can do the impossible today?

JUST SAY NO!

I just watched the movie “Did you hear about the Morgans?” about two successful New Yorkers, Paul (Grant) and Meryl (Parker), who are at their wits’ ends with repairing their strained marriage. She knows of his unfaithfulness to her and while in Wyoming on a witness protection plan she shares with him the news that she has also been unfaithful to him. Needless to say it’s very painful to accept the news and even more painful in real life!

Preachers, politicians, hollywood actors, sports figures, etc. in our day are really struggling with this problem on a daily basis also. It’s very painful to watch even more so when it happens in your own family.

The solution? SAY NO! Say no to sex outside of marriage!

Check out Proverbs 7- The whole chapter (especially verse 25)

What steps can we take to avoid the sexual pitfalls?

1. GUARD YOUR MIND- Don’t read books, look at pictures, or encourage fantasies that stimulate the wrong desires.

2. AVOID CERTAIN PLACES AND PEOPLE- Any place or people that would encourage or tempt you to sin.

3. FOCUS ON THE FUTURE- Count the cost! Ask yourself “how will this feel after it’s over”? “Would I want my spouse and children to know?”

At the end of the movie the couple seems happy enough to be headed back to New York together. But there is always that lack of trust issue that they must fight with so let us learn from the sin of others. You can find forgiveness but it’s hard to forget!

JUST SAY NO!
